WRITING TASK 1

The pie charts below show the consumption of different types of energy in a particular country in two different years.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words (You should spend 20 minutes on this task).

Sample Answer

The two pie charts show the use of different energy sources in one country in the years 2000 and 2010. In 2000, coal, gas, and petrol were the main sources of energy. Coal was used the most at 30%, gas was close behind at 29.5%, and petrol made up 29%. A smaller amount of energy came from solar power (6.5%) and other sources (5%). By 2010, coal and gas were still the top sources. Coal use increased slightly to 31%, and gas also rose to 30%. However, petrol use dropped to 20%, meaning it was used less than before. Solar energy became more popular, rising to 10%, and energy from other sources also increased to 9%. In short, coal and gas stayed the main energy sources. Petrol was used less, while solar and other energy types became more common. This shows the country started to move toward cleaner and greener energy by 2010.

Nowadays, people are exposed to a large number of advertisements.

Do the positive effects of advertising outweigh its negative effects?

Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your knowledge or experience.

Sample Answer

Today, we see advertisements almost everywhere – on TV, mobile phones, social media, websites, and roads. Ads help companies show their products to people, but they also have some bad effects. In my opinion, the negative effects of advertisements are more than the good ones.

There are some good sides to advertising. Ads give us information about new products, services, and discounts. For example, when a company launches a new phone or clothing brand, ads help us know about it. Also, small businesses can grow faster by using online ads to reach more people. Sometimes, ads also spread social messages like saving water or saying no to smoking.

However, advertisements also have many negative effects. Many ads show false promises just to sell their product. This can fool people into buying things they don’t need. Ads often target children by showing toys or junk food, which is not good for their health. Also, too many ads on mobile apps, YouTube, and games can be annoying and distract students from their studies. People may also feel pressure to buy expensive products to look rich or cool.

In conclusion, even though ads help us learn about new products and offers, the bad effects are more serious. They can misguide people, waste their money, and create fake needs. So, we should be careful and not believe every ad we see. It is better to think before buying anything after watching an advertisement.
