WRITING TASK 1

The chart below shows the average daily hours spent on leisure and sports activities by the youngest and oldest age groups in the US in 2015.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words (You should spend 20 minutes on this task).

Sample Answer

The chart shows how much time people aged 15–19 and those aged 75 and above spent each day on leisure and sports activities in the US in 2015. Overall, watching TV was the most common activity for both age groups. Older adults watched TV the most, about 4.5 hours daily, while teenagers watched for around 2.4 hours. Teenagers spent more time playing video games or using computers for fun (1.1 hours), but older people only did this for 0.5 hours. Young people also did more physical activity, like sports and exercise (0.6 hours), while older people spent less time on it (0.2 hours). Reading was more popular among older people, who spent 1 hour a day on it, compared to only 0.2 hours for teenagers. Both groups spent nearly the same amount of time relaxing and socialising. In short, older people preferred peaceful activities like reading and watching TV, while teenagers liked being more active and using technology for fun.

Some people believe that public transport should be funded by the government so that it is free for users.

To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your knowledge or experience.

Sample Answer

I agree that public transport should be free and paid for by the government. It would bring many benefits to people and to the country as a whole.

Firstly, free transport would help people who travel daily for work, study, or other reasons. Many students and workers spend a lot of money on buses and trains. If it becomes free, they can save money and use it for other important things. Poor families would also benefit a lot from this.

Secondly, free public transport can help reduce traffic problems in big cities. If more people start using buses and trains, fewer cars will be on the road. This means less traffic jam, fewer road accidents, and cleaner air. It’s also better for the environment, as it can reduce pollution and global warming.

Of course, making public transport free will cost the government money. But it can be managed by collecting taxes or cutting down on wasteful spending in other areas. In the long run, free transport can even save money by improving public health and reducing road repairs.

To sum up, I believe the government should provide free public transport. It supports people, protects the environment, and improves city life. Though it may cost some money, the benefits are far more valuable.
